A VPN functions by routing the internet connection of whatever device you use it on to your chosen VPN server, rather than using your ISP (Internet Service Provider) connection. In turn, this means when your data is transmitted over the internet, it will be on the part of the VPN’s connection rather than your own internet. 

VPNs essentially mask your IP address, which is a string of numbers assigned to you by your ISP, and when you’re connected to your VPN, you are hiding your own IP address and using the VPN IP address instead.

In short, a VPN will create a private, virtual “tunnel” from your device to the internet and hides your data through encryption to prevent prying eyes from accessing your information. 

How does VPN Encryption Work? (Basic Form)

VPN Encryption describes how your data is kept private when using a VPN service or system. Encryption hides information by transforming it into a randomly generated string, that has to have a very strong password (that you will never know) before it is unencrypted. This password, or “key” as it is, is transferred between two devices: your device and the VPN server.

For example, if you were to submit information to a bank, they use special encryption that will encrypt your information on your device, send it over the internet as an encrypted file that is completely unreadable to us, and then be decoded on the bank’s end. This is necessary encryption. 

There are several variations of VPN encryptions.
